Patricia Holden

Biography

Professor Holden is an environmental engineer and microbiologist researching pollution: origins, consequences, and solutions. We define questions and answer via: field surveillance and sampling; chemical and microbial analyses; mathematical modeling; statistical and spatial analyses; laboratory microcosms and mesocosms. We leverage engineering, microbiology, soil science, microbial ecology, molecular biology, geographic information analysis, and analytical chemistry. We collaborate with materials scientists, geneticists, inorganic chemists, sociologists, anthropologists, soil ecologists, clinicians, physicists, and aquatic terrestrial, population and community, ecologists, and public agency environmental managers. Current interests include: pathogens in urban coastal waters including relationships to urban infrastructure; the vadose zone; natural treatment systems for urban storm water runoff; nanomaterials as terrestrial ecosystem hazards; micropollutants in protected areas.
